Lord, Let Me Be a Cowboy Today

Got my Chevy truck, can of Cope and dog named Blue
Cuz life didn’t change when I met you
Raised the kids and private school hulla-balloo
Passed another 20 years before I knew what to do

I kept the job, climbed the ladder, started drinking, nothing mattered
You left with him, I had a fit, you said there’s no way out of it
I had it all, or so it seemed, but I lived in someone else’s dream

Who am I, do I know, do I care anyway?
Oh, Lord, let me be a cowboy today

With a shucks and a shuffle and a yee’ haw pard
Got a ropin’ dummy in my back yard
Got my sixty-foot rope and how-to video
Got a set of spurs that jingle and make the horse go
Got my heel shot, hip shot and ocean wave
Got my chew can, houlihan and I don’t shave

Ain’t a day goes by that I don’t wonder why
I can’t find country with enough blue sky
Got my mortage, alimony and a college degree
I just came to my senses, but I’m almost 63

Who am I, do I know, do I care anyway?
Oh, Lord, let me be a cowboy today

Got my truck and my dog and two years to go
Then I’ll get out the map and head down the road
Like the guys back when who followed the sun
Sittin’ on a horse with just a rope and loaded gun

Got a Carhart jacket and a baseball cap
Got my lip full of chew and my western rap
Got my stained Levi’s and the boots don’t fit
Got an old busted saddle and a rusted bit
For the wall in the den where I sit all night
In the armchair dreamin’ of the great gunfights

So it’s camp coffee, flank shot and do-si-do
Don’t know about you but I really have to go
Got the dually runnin’ with the radio on
It’s the Nashville thing, and it’s soon long gone

Who am I, do I know, do I care anyway?
Oh, Lord, just let me be a cowboy today!
