Leslie Desmond co-authored and published Bill Dorrance's classic training manual, "True Horsemanship Through Feel", in 1999.  The legendary horseman's legacy of horse handling and riding through Feel & Release continues -- and, now, you can be a part of it!

If you are a horse trainer and have reached an impasse with a client's horse, this is a good opportunity to break the cycle. Come and have a look at some of the things Leslie Desmond learned during her four-year apprenticeship with master horseman Bill Dorrance (1906-1999) from Salinas, CA.  Questions will be answered throughout the demonstrations.

Trainers in many countries, representing many disciplines have taken Leslie's help and successfully re-launched their careers into an exciting new direction and not only reached, but exceeded many of their goals using feel & release.

Leslie will show these techniques and explain the philosophy of feel & release with four horses in the demonstration format for 90-minutes. During the session, as needed, she will coach the trainer/owner one-on-one in the techniques.

At this demonstration you will learn what she values in a foundation that can take a horse into most any line of work, sport, or competitive discipline. Leslie enjoys sharing the philosophy, techniques and explaining the angles/positions necessary to lighten up your hands, position your upper body and legs while you ride. You will learn what Bill Dorrance showed her about refining the presentation to the horse using feel & release on the ground and from the saddle, too, if rideable horses are register for the event. All breeds and riding styles are welcome. Please contact Mary Brazie at email/phone above if you have questions about the suitability of your horse to participate in this demonstration.

WHAT ELSE WILL YOU LEARN?

Leslie will help you understand how to know where the feet are, without looking, and how to place and replace them, and be able to adjust your horse's head, neck, shoulders, rips, loin and hips  . . .  all this with lighter hands as you refine your new skills on the ground and in under saddle, too!

Many years ago, Leslie would set a horse up to fail her expectations without realizing it her own role in the problems she encountered with some horses. She made a problem that she could correct in the ways she had been shown.  After a lot of thought and observing good examples of problem solving with difficult horses, she learned that it was possible to set a horse up to succeed right off, so that few if any corrections are loves its job that I have ever learned,” Desmond said.

For some people this is a revolutionary concept. For others, it is an idea that was suspected to have validity all along, but the best route to accomplish that illusive task was not known or, for some reason, not easily managed.

If you want to learn about this prior to the event, go to the RESOURCES page, or the GENERAL STORE for learning tools that will help you get acquainted ahead of time with the philosophy she adheres to, and the techniques she uses to help horses and their trainers and owners past the sticky spots in their development, and well beyond!

Leslie will explain these details and demonstrate the approach thoroughly at Green River Arabians & Pintos, (and the home of the Sheffield Whinnies 4-H club!) demonstration on Sunday, April 6, 2014.  Hopefully spring will be well underway by then, but remember to dress warmly if it hasn’t!  See you there!

In recent years, Leslie has been educating volunteers, staff and students at horse handling, riding and training demonstrations across America. Most recently she raised money for the Medicine Horse Program in Boulder, Colorado. She has shared Bill Dorrance's message at many unwanted-horse centers, rehab facilities, and equine assisted therapeutic riding establishments.  If you and/or your horse could benefit from her assistance to get past a trouble spot, or would like to advance and include more feel & release in the work you are already enjoying, your name will be added to the "First Called" list for the next available event booking. Preference is given to non-profit horse rescue centers and to private facilities where trainers who have reached an impasse in their work with customers and horses, or who want more than the same-old, same-old approach to their clients horses, are ready to learn more about feel & release and how to apply it...starting the next day!

Please contact Leslie via email and include your complete contact details (phones, post address, website if you have one, etc.) here:

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ALL RIDERS:

Since 1992 I have recommended the use of helmets and safety stirrups to my students. Outfitting all saddles with safety stirrups on all saddles is a requirement this year, and helmets must be worn. There are many varieties and brands to choose from online. English versions are stocked at most tack shops, or available through them.

My preference for western saddles is a stirrup manufactured by the McCoy family's STI from Laurel, Montana. Their website can be found here, or researched later on for the custom size and style you need at www.breakawaystirrups.com.

Not an online shopper? No worries! Contact them directly by calling 888-308-0848 and request a brochure!  When you get in a bind, you and the people who care about you will be thrilled that you did!
