FEEL & RELEASE
"My main goal is to teach others how to teach their students to develop a reliable partnership that is based on feel. We are not talking about mechanics when we are talking about feel. There is quite a bit to it. We are focusd on the horse's mind, and the intelligent ways he has of knowing what you want and doing what you want as any full and dedicated partner would if he or she could." Leslie knows this way and is available to help you learn it. Click to contact Leslie.
WHAT WILL WE LEARN FROM LESLIE DESMOND IN MAY?
How to release your horses to the desired maneuvers instead of forcing them!
Can you depart at the gallop and ask for a one-stride stop without taking up the reins.
If your approach to trailer loading, lead changes, the upwards and downward transitions is rough, this approach will get you off a plateau and moving ahead . . . immediately!
Does your horse need help getting back to a former state of happiness and safe behaviour after trauma from accidents, mishandling and bad training experiences?
If the answer is yes, Bill Dorrance’s feel-based approach will make a difference.
Leslie uses a halter, a rope, and feel & release. She uses no flag, stick, whip or restraint devices to achieve submission.
Why is this? . . . one could wonder. Submission cannot be the goal if partnership is.

And let’s not forget,that:
„Horses deserve better!”
The mission behind the event „Natural Horsemanship! … only from pure source!” :
- To present experts to those who are keen on reaching lightness with their horses through partnership
- To present Horsemen and Horsewomen who have proved my approach to horses right
- To present the core of Natural Horsemanship
- To present the true qualities of Natural Horsemanship...only from pure source through clinicians who represent this approach the best in order to raise the level of horsemanship in Hungary.
Leslie Desmond and the Clinic
Leslie Desmond
Leslie was born in Germany, and grew up New ENgland, USA. She learned about her first horse from a neighbor who was educated in the "old school." She trained the horses that she rode in regional jumping competitions and local gymkhana events, and then went on to coach children and new horse owners in the basics of riding and horse care. After high school, she worked show barns, racing stables and small breeding establishments on the east coast and Midwest USA.
For almost 50 years -- starting in 1965 at the age of 11 -- Leslie has been offering help to horses and the people who love and ride them. Among these were troubled horses that others had given up on... race horses, show ponies, draft horses, jumpers and other kinds of performance and backyard pleasure horses. She developed a few of her own horses to a nice level where she could share them with her students.
"This is the highest compliment that I can give to a student. In that gesture, in that offering, they know -- here is a horse Leslie has trained that I can trust, here is a horse I can learn from. Here is a horse that is sure about what's expected of him, and there is not a chance that I can ruin him or untrain him. What I offer to them is my friend, I want to introduce them, and share access to an incredible, feel-release-based connection. Most people are blown away by this experience, and they take that inspiration forward in their development and search for refinement in their horse-handling and riding from that moment on. It's a very rewarding experience for me, too, as you can imagine!" |
In 1990, Leslie relocated her riding school to Novato, California, where she founded Diamond Lu Productions and released her first three-volume video series, "American Horsemanship for Young & Old. She was inspired to produce the best-selling "how-to" horsemanship series for beginners by her most influential childhood mentor, Ivan Taylor, a retired World War I cavalry officer from Manchester, Vermont . "Ivan was in his mid-90s when I met him and the sessions we had back in the early 1960s prepared me to fully enjoy my work with people and horses in the decades that followed. Ivan's gentle approach also prepared me to recognize the priceless gift that the late Bill Dorrance (1906 - 1999) - the legendary horseman and rancher from Salinas, California - left for those of us who want to work with our horses through feel," Leslie said. |
During the last years of his life, Bill asked Leslie to accept his guidance during a 4-year apprenticeship while she recorded his knowledge and experiences for posterity.
Between 1995 and 1999 they trained horses together, put on demonstrations and held clinics around Monterey County, California, while she co-wrote the classic text, "True Horsemanship Through Feel". The sequel to their book, a 10-CD audio book called "Horse Handling and Riding Through Feel" that Leslie published in 2006, is an info-packed guide to better horsemanship through feel. "It was my hope to ease the serious horseman's journey by creating an easy learning avenue," she said. "My dream is that horse enthusiasts and trainers from all disciplines will consider and take on board the finer points of feel and release as they travel down the road." |
Leslie now works mainly with trainers and serious intermediate-advanced riders who want to improve their horse handling and riding skills through feel. She lives half the year in Europe and continues to hold horse training seminars and demonstrations in the US. In addition to the UK, Leslie's schedule for 2013includes clinics in Norway, Sweden, Germany, Hungary, Canada and the USA. |
Leslie Desmond’s clinic:
What can you learn during the clinic and the Friday night demo?
Auditors can pre-register anytime until day of the event. Walk-ins welcome, but pre-registration advised. Fee scale, payment options and details below.
On demo night on Friday, May 17th, Leslie will prepare riders and auditors to understand the concepts, philosophy, techniques and applications of feel & release as it was taught to Leslie Desmond by Bill Dorrance.
Discussion / demonstration for the evening will center on issues that will benefit owners of young, troubled or untrained horses. Topics include: appropriate boundaries relative to specific circumstances, placement and timing of the feet, positioning of the head and neck, shoulders, ribs, loin and hips to ensure safe, accurate and pleasurable handling of the horse, pony or mule.
What will you learn during the clinic and at the Saturday night demonstration?
The Clinic
The difference between "pressure and release" and "feel and release", and the circumstances in which a person and their horse would benefit most from the use of either one.
To recognize the basic feel & release requests for any gait, and direction and/or backing up. Maneuvers will be demonstrated in a smooth, slow and accurate manner so the auditors can understand what they are seeing, and the horse is not stressed.
Leslie will show you how to influence changes in posture (poll, mid neck, base of neck, elevation of the shoulders, heart girth, ribs, loin, hips) and to help the horse think clearly and move precisely as he places his feet.
Participating in this event is extremely valuable for horses and riders from all disciplines!
Leslie will work with riders in small groups of 4-6.
