Leslie's Latest NEWS
Right - Tied Halters and Ropes that carry a great feel are now available from Desmond Outfitter; Rebate from the Top Western Safety Stirrup Maker from Lauren, MT
More horse-gear from Desmond Outfitter is now in stock.
SAFETY FIRST!: IF YOU PURCHASE THESE ITEMS BE SURE TO COIL YOU ROPE PROPERLY AND TIE A CORRECT ROPE-HALTER KNOT. IF YOU ARE GOING TO TIE YOUR HORSE UP WITH ANY ROPE< BE SURE YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE VARIOUS KNOTS THAT ARE COMMONLY USED FOR THIS PURPOSE. MANY PEOPLE LIKE TO USE A BOWLINE, A CLOVE HITCH, A SO-CALLED "Quick-Release" KNOT, OR OTHERS.
IF YOUR HORSE HAS NOT ALREADY BEEN TRAINED TO STAND TIED COMFORTABLY, AND YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE PROCESS NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE THIS OBJECTIVE CALMLY AND SAFELY, IT IS IMPORTANT TO GET HELP. THIS HELP CAN BE FOM A PROFESSIONAL TRAINER, OR FROM SOMEONE WHOSE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE WITH HORSES IS SUFFICIENT TO EDUCATE THE HORSE AND, EQUALLY IMPORTANT, TO TEACH YOU HOW TO KEEP THAT SOLID FOUNDATION IN TYING AND HANDLING IN PLACE.
WHY IS A RIGHT-TIED HALTER IMPORTANT? DOES MY HORSE NEED ONE? DO I?
Many horses are handled primarily on their left sides by right-handed people for basic tasks throughout their lives. This can and usually does lead to an imbalance in the way a horse presents itself to a person (left shoulders and leg heavy, leading and leaning into a person, and the right hip often set back, resulting in a horse that does not often stand squarely as a default, or at all. Read more about this in the ARTICLES section of this site. LINK HERE:
Right-tied halters in the following sizes are now available: draft, large, regular, small horse, yearling sizes.
Available colors:
black
red
royal blue
dark green
brown
tan
red & black pin stripe
tan & black pin stripe
blue & black wide stripe
green & black wide stripe
yellow & brown wide stripe
purple & pink wide stripe
Leslie has also re-stocked her ropes in a variety of lengths for different jobs. These ropes carry a clear feel. They carry the best feel of any she has found in decades of using rope (of natural and synthetic materials) from the climbing, fishing, sailing and logging / tree service industries. These ropes convey your better feel -- and your worst, as well, it must be said -- directly to the horse. In ways that other popular ropes do not, Leslie's ropes immediately reveal, convey and confirm the actual facts about your connection to your horse on the ground! This feedback is valuable and can be trusted if it is interpreted correctly.
The downside: Some people prefer a very light rope or canvas/synthetic tape to lunge or lead their horse. The good news is that these are available at most tack stores and on-line mail order houses.
Leslie's ropes and halters do not easily absorb and retain sand, moisture, grit and/or granular composites from various arena natural and synthetic arena footings. They are washable and can also be line dried or withstand countless trips through a commercial dryer. The latigo poppers on the ropes also withstand dozens of trips through the washer and dryer.
Leslie's preferred lead rope is available in five lengths for your convenience: 12, 15, 18, 20, and 25 ft. lengths.
Ideal rope lengths for various tasks are shown below. This is a guide based on my experience over the years; your needs and circumstances should determine your decision about which length is best for you and your horses.
Leading and tying small mini, donkey, pony or small horse: 12 ft.
Leading, lunging and/or tying a large pony, mid-sized horse, donkey or mule: 15 ft. or 18 ft.
Leading, lunging and/ or tying an untrained mid-sized to large horse, or mule: 18 ft to 20 ft.
Leading or lunging a reactive or insensitive large horse, large mule, draft horse: 18 ft., 20 ft., or 25 ft.

This weekend in Canyon, Leslie will explain the approach and demonstrate the straightforward techniques that Bill Dorrance showed her during her extensive apprenticeship. Come and check it out!
What will you learn? By the end of this weekend you will clearly understand the feel & release philosophy and few simple techniques that more and more people are using successfully to get most out of their horse experience -- on horseback and a'foot!
If you are a horse trainer and have reached an impasse with a client's horse, this is a good opportunity to break the cycle.
Trainers in Germany, Spain, Norway, UK, Sweden, Finland, France, Hungary and Italy representing many disciplines have taken Leslie's lead and support to successfully re-launch their careers into an exciting new direction. In less time than imagined, they have even surpassed their stated goals using feel & release and are moving ahead with renewed enjoyment in their work, and a confident refinement in their approach to their students and their horses.
This approach was advocated by master horseman Bill Dorrance. Feel & release is both carefully explained and well-illustrated in the 368-page classic training manual, "True Horsemanship Through Feel” that Leslie co-wrote and published for Bill in 1999. A few years later, Leslie produced the 10-C audio book, "Horse Handling and Riding Through Feel". She is now quite close to completing two new books (“Riding with Bill” and “The Feel of a Horse” that she has been working on for the last few years.
This weekend in Canyon, Leslie will explain the approach and demonstrate the straightforward techniques that Bill showed her during her extensive apprenticeship. Come and check it out!
Can't make the weekend commitment?
Enjoy the Friday afternoon demonstration and get the essential points to think about and techniques to carry home that will change your connection to horses for the better from that point forward.
She will demonstrate the techniques, angles and body alignment necessary to lighten up the hands, release the horse's withers and shoulders into maneuvers on a loose leading rein, and much more. Important upper body and leg positions will be shown and as riders refine their presentation to their horses using feel & release. Auditors, as well, will be amazed to realize how simple is it to achieve and maintain correct equitation necessary for a horse to perform at its optimum capacity Friday, October 25, 2013 from 4:30 - 6:30 PM and then please join us for a dinner in town.
During the private 90-min. lesson format on Saturday and Sunday (from 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM with a lunch break at 12:30 - 2:00 PM) riders and auditors will be immersed in the simple but essential aspects of Leslie's horse-training foundation. (See schedule, below.)
You will see what Bill Dorrance showed Leslie about refining the presentation to the horse using feel & release. After this, you will know were the feet are, how to replace them, and be able to adjust your horse's head, neck, shoulders, rips, loin and hips . . . all this with lighter hands as you refine your new skills on the ground and in mounted work, too.
